Engine Cooling problem
2000 Chevy Malibu 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

While driving I can feel a hesitation and then my temp gauge drops below 100 then goes back up constantly. When it does this my car accelerates or rpms increases and causes it to shift very rough. My a/c also shuts off and on. I had it scanned and came up with to codes: P0118 & P1115. I was told by an establishment that the code was ect sensor and it could cause the problem with the transmission and other areas of the car. My question is; can it effect the transmission and the a/c to shut off and on or not?

A bad ECT will cause problems and is a mian input to the PCM, if it spikes it can cause strnge behavior, with two ECT codes there is no room for doubt, something in that circuit needs work.

Thank you for your help. I have had the car in 3 different shops and have had issues with each of them so just want to confirm. Also, is this sensor something that I or my husband could change ourselves?

Yes, just do it when the engine is cold. Some antifreeze will leak out.
