I herd a clunking sound when I turned the wheel to the left or the right. Espically at slower speeds. One day there was a really big clunk not the wheel spins freele. Any thoughts

Have you checked the steering components, ball joints, and the coil springs for cracks? Did it ever make a clicking sound when turning?

I figured out the problem. It is the intermediate steering shaft. Any advice on how to replace it? There is not a lot of room to work in the 2000 malibu 3.1

I'm glad you figured out the problem. However, doesn't the car have a rack and pinion steering? Based on your description, it sounds like you are refering to a drag link, but your car shouldn't have one. Or, are you refering to the actual rack and pinion itself?
