I just rebuilt the motor in my 99 malibu. When I was reconnecting the electrical I ended up with an extra black wire with a 1/4 or 5/16 terminal lug that hangs down close to the starter. I have the correct wires on the starter and the car runs fine, but my instrument cluster is dead (all of the guages) and I can't seem to figure out where the wire should be connected. Can you help? I have the following:
Large red wire from battery attached to starter.
large ground wire and some sort of relay bolted to the starter housing.
small black wire connected to the small post on the starter

Black wire may be another ground wire. Use a test light or meter to see if it has power with key on, if no power at all, try grounding it to see if that fixes the gauges. Most ground wires are black, so they are easily identifiable.
