Engine Performance problem
1980 Chevy Malibu 6 cyl Automatic 76,000 miles

It doesn't always happen, but when I drive for more than 15 minutes, then shut my car off, it sputters for a while, before finally going quiet. I turned the key back on while it was sputtering, and the engine immedeately caught back up and idled. How can I fix this?

Sounds like your carb is running rich. I would suggest trying to lean the carb settings and see if that works. You may also want to have your timing check and make sure the engine is in time.

It is what they call dieseling. It is where the engine keeps firning after the ignition is shut off. Check the timing or try using a lower octane gas that is if you are useing a higher octane. The temp guage read normal? Sometimes have seen a little buld up carbon that gets hot inside the engine and will make it diesel.
