I had my car looked at recently and the mechanic says I need a new catalytic converter. He said the muffler is fine I just need a new converter. Please tell me what to look for. My engine is a 3.1L. Thank you for your help.

If the cat. Converter is bad than you may experience poor fuel mileage and decreased engine power. Any black smoke coming from the exhaust pipe may be a symptom of a bad catalytic converter as well as slight overheating of the engine. Converters rarely fail on their own though, you will want to find the cause of it going bad before replacing it. An example would be bad oxygen sensor(s).
