My 97 lumina 3.1 has had a problem for about four years. The injector for the #1 cyl. Appears to allow fuel to leak into the cyl. After the engine is turned off. The injector has been replaced twice and several mechanics have been unable to find what is causing the problem. When idling the car also has a smell of gas/strong exaust smell. I had the heads off a couple of years ago and the #1 cyl was filled with gas. The engine idles smoothly and has good power through the range of speeds.

Sounds like a short in the injector wires. Try taking the injector wire off and test the voltage with a 12 volt voltage meter. Also look for any exposed or sliced wires. The injector is still getting power when your car is off. Thats why its filling up with fuel. Check every wire leading to the troubled injector. Good luck. :)
