Let me start by describing the growing problem I've been having with my Lumina Van, with the 3.1L engine. Ever since we installed a replacemnt A/C compressor, we noticed a louder than normal shreak or squeal. (To me it sounds like the engine belt has to work too hard to turn this component)
I've had to apply belt dressing, which doesn't seem to work anymore.
Lately, its squeals very loudly when turning over, then disappears.
Today, nothing. Plenty of charge on the battery, but it sounds like the starter has too much resistance.
When I finally got it close to turning over, I heard this unearthly squeal. I shut down everything and saw smoke rising from the engine, the burnt rubber smell, and a fine layer of gray dust exactly under the serpentine belt. Has something seized on the serpentine belt?

Please tell me its not timing belt related...
Thanks for any advice.

First, chances are it has nothing to do with the timing belt. I need you to do 2 things. First, remove the serp belt and check all of the accessories. My guess is one is locked. Next, with the belt off, see if the car will start. NOTE: ONLY LET RUN A FEW SECONDS WITHOUT A BELT. IT WILL OVERHEAT AND CAN CAUSE MAJOR DAMAGE.

Let me know what you find.

You were right on! I had taken off the serpentine belt, and it started easily. (exactly same steps you described) Bingo! the AC Compressor pulley was completely seized.

I've since swapped the original back in (although with a leak, I know it won't help at all for summer weather in DC).
Thank you for responding

I'm glad you found the problem. Is the new one under warranty? Maybe you could get them to partially cover the part if it is just out of warranty.

Good luck,
