Some cars have a control valve that turns on and shuts off the flow of coolant to the heater core through those hoses on the firewall. However, I think this car lacks such a valve and the heater is controlled only mechanically by the ductwork door, i.e., coolant flows through the heater core all the time. Coolant can leak from the hoses; from the valve, if equipped; really from just about anywhere. At any rate, if you don't get it fixed, you'll probably be back at that red line soon.
