Is it ok for the engine temp to go to half point of the gauge and then go down a little bit. How hot does the engine get before the fan comes on.

Yes it normally goes down a hair when the thermostat opens because now the coolant can cool.

It depends on how hot the engine gets before the fans turn on. Should near the 1/2 mark, or when the ac is turned on.

The fan doenst really need to run till the vehicle is idling because no air is flwoing through the radiator and the fan is what is used to simulate that.
