I recently replaced the drive belt and about a week later I started hearing a rattle noise when the air conditioning was NOT on. As soon as I turn the air on you can hear it engage and the rattle goes away.
The motor is a 3.8 series 2. Any ideas?

Check the a/c compressor for the noise. With the car running anfd the a/c off you should be able to tell if it is the bearing in the a/c unit.

Thanks for the info. It sounds like you're right. Does this meen I have to replace the entire A/C compressor or can the bearing be replaced somehow? I'm a little surprised that it makes the noise with the A/C off rather than when it is on.

Thanks again.

It might be cheaper to get a used compressor from a auto salvage yard. The compressor does come apart and the bearings can be replaced. If you don't have thr tools to discharge the a/c then I suggest a person who has the equipment to reclaim the freon do it. Check around for prices on fixing the bearing.
