chevy corsica steering locking up

I have a 1996 chevy corsica 6 cylinder with about 150000 miles on it. Every once in a while my battery light will come on and my steering wheel will lock up. The car will continue to run like it is getting full power, but the wheel wont turn. What can I do to fix this problem?

Check the belt
Check the alternator it may be freezing up on you
Check belt tensioner
