1993 Chevy Corsica Fuel Filter replacement

I am trying to replace the fuel filter in my 93 corsica, and I have taken off gas cap, pulled BOTH electical plugs from behind fuel filter (one line goes to brakes and one travels in direction with fuel lines) then ran car until it died, and when I go to take off the fuel lines it seems like there is no end to the fuel coming out. Am I missing something? The manual only tells me to do the things i've done and I dont want to waste $30 in gas if it doesnt stop leaking

Either you need to be really quick connecting the new filter, or if there is a rubber line on it, pinch it shut with vice grips.
