2006 Chevy Cobalt Troubleshooting steps for no power steeri

What are the troubleshooting steps to determine what is wrong with the power steering. I suspect the control module. It was intermittent for a couple days and now is out. Should I just replace the assembly. Looks like they are a unit.

before you troubleshoot you need to have the power steering control module scanned with a tech 2.need to see what code is in the sys for proper diagnoses.these modules are replaced as a whole unit,which is the whole steering colounm and are VERY expensive.this would be a costly mistake if not diagnosed wright.post back with the code first.
