Engine Mechanical problem
1999 Chevy Cavalier 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual

First I have a 2.4L engine with a manual transmission. I am buying a new motor. Do I have to get a motor from a manual driven car or can it be an automatic? Secondly if I buy the motor an take my car to a mechanic to have him take my old one out an put my new one in, about how much should that cost me?

Whether it is a manual or automatic doesnt matter. Teh flexplate or flywheel will be swapped over from your original engine. The labor charge (book time) is between 14.8 and 15.8 hours of labor. So multiply that times what their shop hourly rate is. There is always a few hundred dollars in extras as well, like coolant, motor oil, thermostat, any belts or hoses it may need. I suggest a new water pump as well

How come you suggest a new water pump? And what would you ball park on an hourly rate?

If you are doing a new engine, a water pump is cheap insurance, and sometimes they fail prematurely after being removed from one engine and put on another, dont ask me why. Labor rates vary depending on area, 70+ an hour is normal
