Yesterday my car started excessively smoking. So much so I thought the car was on fire. But after a couple of minutes, the smoking all but stopped. At no time did the car run rough or misfire. Only when I looked into my rearview mirror did I see the smoke coming out of the exhaust. Any ideas about what could be causing this?

White is from water or anti-freeze. Is the coolant level low?

The coolant level is good. The car never over heated.

Could oil mixing with gas in one or more cylinders be the cause of the smoke?

If oil was getting into the cylinder (which is possible) it would be blue not white.
