Engine Cooling problem
1991 Chevy Cavalier Automatic 89000 miles

My car started running hot so I pulled over and when I cut the motor it started smoking terribly under the hood and Antifreeze freely ran out of the car. I noticed a hose had busted. I changed it and the car ran hot again. Someone told me it was the thermostat. I changed it. My car is still running hot. Then I noticed that my fan was not running with or without air conditioner. I understand that it could be a relay or a sensor, a fuse or even a blown head gasket. Where do I start in trying to find out?

First try spinning the fan by hand, does it spin freely? No bearngs crunching? Test for power at the fan connector, if no power check the ECT and the fan relay, relay should be under the hood in the power distribution box. If there is power at the connector, replace the fan.

I had the same issue with my 1990 Cav. Never had it boil over though. I pulled the fan out and hooked it up to a old 12volt battery form a drill to see if it spun, and how fast it spun. (Probably not safe but it helped troubleshoot it) It didn't spin. I assisted it on take off then it would spin slowly. I replaced it and all was good.
Good luck!!
