I have a 89 cavalier z24. I have never changed the transmission fluid in the car for the three years I have had it. When I bought the car it already had 100, 00 miles on it. The problem I have now is that the transmission slips. After you drive the car for about 40 minutes, the transmission will not shift into third gear sometimes.

Hi there,

Time for you to get the transmission serviced & tested, there are a number of things that can cause your problem, so describe the problem to the tech when he services the transmission. Do this sooner rather than later as if it is a more serious problem you will run the risk of doing more expensive damage.

Another thing I nelgected to mention is that ever since I have had the car, You have to press the gas pedal to get it to shift into 1st gear. If you let the car warm up and shift into D the engine will start to idle a little rough and will conitue uintil the engine stops. My dad told me not to mash on the gas to change the gears, but he didn't say what was causing it to do that, so I don't know what is causing that problem too.

Hi there,

You may well be down on line pressure in the transmission. Reeving the engine increases pump pressure and things start to work, more reason to get it all checked by a trans specialist.
