My car will run perfectly fine but sometimes will not start. I have replaced the fuel filter, and I can hear the fuel pump starting up, but the car will not turn over. It cranks but wont start. Then, twice, I had my car towed to the dealer and it started up when the mechanic got in. It has had hard starts where it takes a bit of cranking to actually start it but twice now, it would not start at all until I had it towed. This has happened only since I replaced the fuel filter (not starting), but the hard starts have been happening for a while now. Has anyone had this problem before? I don't want to replace the fuel pump if it is something else.

The same thing is happening to my car now. I was having problems with it starting. It would work occasionally and at times it wouldn't. I took it to a mechanic and was told after a diagnositcs test that it was the fuel pump, yet I can hear the fuel pump turning on when I turn the ignition. I have replaced the fuel filter and I am still having problems. The mechanic quoted me a steep price of 850 dollars to fix it. I am concerned that I am being ripped off considering the pump only cost approx. 240 dollars. I wanted to get a little more insight before I buy a fuel pump and that not be the problem. If anyone has any comments please let me know.

If the pressure is not in specs it will prevent it from starting. Recommend a fuel pressure check if that's okay-have the crankshaft position sensor check for a start.

Is there any possibility that it is the fuel relay?
