Engine light came on today when I went through a big puddle of water using my brakes when going through it. I filled my car up with gas two days ago and checked to make sure the cap was secure today after engine light came on. Could the engine light of came on and is still on because I went through a puddle of water or could it of been my gas cap was not secure? How long should I wait before going to a mechanic?

My guess is there will be an evaporative code.

You should at the very least find out what code is stored in the computer within a few weeks time.

IF the light isn't flashing, it is not an immediate concern, but you don't want to put this off for months either.

Water may have gotten into a connector, pulled of a hose etc. I doubt it is your gas cap.
