first how do i determine the gear ratio, i bought the truck from my deceased cousins wife. And what do i need to do to repair it

There should be a tag on the cover for the rear diff. under one of the bolts. If this is gone the only way is to pull the cover and count the teeth on the ring and pinion gear.
