OK I have an odd one. My old blazer fires right up about 90% of the time, but every now and then after driving it for a bit (and its hot). I will go out and turn the key and nothing happens. No click from coil or anything...nothing happens.

So, i can by-pass my ignition and touch the two points on the starter to where it turns the engine. Then go to my ignition and it turns over just fine. I thought it could be one of the wires were perhaps getting hot and causing short circuit but then why after bypassing the ignition at starter, it works correctly?

Replace the starter solenoid, or the whole starter, solenoid and all, See if the heat shield is in place, it may have rusted out over this much time. Heat shield is between the exhaust pipe and starter.
By jumping the solenoid, you are momentarily re connecting the solenoid. Remeber the old hammer whack trick?

I know that by jumping the solenoid, you are momentarily re connecting the solenoid but then why after just doing that for a split second i can go back to ignition and it works? The only thing i didnt want to do is replace starter then have it not be the issue.

thanks

Because youi are moving it off a dead spot, try leaving the key ON and doing the jump, it should start.
