I have a 99 Astor 4.3 AWD 120,000 miles, LT.
I need rear brakes and a right rear axel seal. I don't know if I have drum or disk brakes. I want to know if I can do the work myself without to much cost or do I let someone else who know's what there doing charge me a arm and leg to repair it.
The other question is, It says AWD on the van. The front wheels pull going forward but do nothing going backward. Are they not sapose to move backward when the rear wheels are slipping?
Thank you. :|

If you have an all wheel drive, and have never done an axle seal, LEAVE it alone! It will have a limited slip (Posi-trac) Rear end. You need the tools and the know how on these!

I never saw a posi like this. One wheel goes then stops then the other goes then stops and soforth and so on. I had a truck that had posi and if one wheel slipped the other kicked in right away and both wheels would go at the same time. This thing to me is weard. I'm not asying your wrong or anything it's just strange to me. What about the front wheels going backwards? Are they sapose to go backwards when you slip?

I agree with merlin, take the van in to have it properly diagnosed.

The slip sounds like possible defective ABS system, but without more complex inspection its hard to tell.

If you have any more questions we would be glad to assist you.
