2002 Chevy Astro no start

02 astro van. while starting, hear fuel pump start, relays engage, but nothing happens. park or neutral.
headlights stay on.
keep trying and eventually starter will engage and engine starts.
battery is due for replacement.
fuel pump replaced 14 months ago.
daily driver 36 mi one way to work.

does, it try to start? it just doesnt engage?

sounds like its going through the start sequence, turn key to start, hear the start relay engage but starter does not engage or spin.
cycling the ignition switch and eventually starter will engage and start motor.
wonder if the starter has a flat spot.

yeah I suspect that also, could be a chipped tooth on the starter or flexplate. or the starter, could just be having a problem with engaging.

Replaced the starter. problem solved.
open winding when starter is at high ambient heat, after cooling starter would work.
