AFTER INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKETS WERE REPLACED WHICH INCLUDED REMOVING DISTRIBUTOR AND ALL ENGINE SENSOR CONNECTORS, THE ENGINE WOULD BACKFIRE THRU THE INTAKE AS IF TIMING WAS OFF. THE TIMING WAS CHECKED WITH NO 1 ON COMPRESSION STROKE AT TDC AND DRISTRIBUTOR ROTOR POINTING RIGHT AT NO 1. STILL BACKFIRED AND NO START. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Where does it backfire from the intake or exhaust?

As I stated in the forum, it would backfire thru the INTAKE and catch the excessive fuel on fire as if timing was way off. MAKING SURE no. 1 is on compression stroke and at TDC by checking with the mark on the harmonic balancer, has been repeated a dozen times.

The only thing I can think of is to check the crank sensor. Also, if it is firing through the intake, you could have an intake valve problem. Have you checked compression? As far as the timing, you did it right.
