Brakes problem
2000 Chevy Astro V6 All Wheel Drive Automatic 148000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
Lost power brakes and steering at the same time today when slightly stuck in about 6 inches of new snow. I have been running with just rear wheel drive as I had to remove the front drive shaft from transmission to front diff as the full volicity joint went bad and I did not have the money to replace it yet. What might be wrong and/ or what part may have caused this problem? I would like to know also if the part can be repaired as opposed to buying the whole new thing. I haven't had time to recover from the first problem and now have another! Thanks for your help.

This van uses hydraulic fluid (power steering fluid) to power the brake booster. If the fluid is low or the pump fails you will loose both power brakes and steering. I would also check to make sure the belt is not slipping due to a bad belt tensioner.

Hope this helps
