1992 Chevy Astro 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 180 K miles

Consumer Report has written that oil need not be changed every 3000 miles, that most cars are designed to have oil changed every 7500 miles. They say check your owners manual. I don't have one for my vehicle. What is recommended for the Astro van and is Consurmer Report's statement true?

Hi Paul,

Ok, well the answer is Yes and No.

The frequency of oil change depends on the climate you live in.

For instance if you live on on near the coast with heavy salt air you should stick to the 3000 mile changes.

If you live in an area with high dust you should stick to the 3000 mile changes.

Or take a look at your oil at 3000 miles after oil change if it still look pretty clean then go another 3000 miles.

Another tidbit of info. I believe they may be talking about newer vehicles that are using the Synthetic Oils. With Synthetic Oil you can go between 5k and 7500 miles.

If you are using Synthetic Oil then Yes you can do the 5k to 7500 mile changes.
