Alternator is broken.
Car belt broke and was driven for around 7 minutes before losing power. Gas peddle went limp, faint chugging noise, and the smell of maple syrup from a minor coolant leak from the radiator.

Car will not start, when attempting to start a whine is audible and the the serpentine belt turns; however, the car does not start. Oil seems fine, and there is no visible damage or disconnected wires. When plugging into the computer, no codes were reported. I believe a faulty alternator was the cause of the broken belt.

I also believe the car may have over heated. A pop was described (which I think was the belt breaking) and the car drive for about 7 minutes before the gas peddle went limp and the car was forced to stop. A small bit of coolant was spraying from the top of the radiator.

The car is a Scion TC 2008, it uses a timing chain and is an interference engine. I believe I was able to see the cam shaft spin through the oil cap. It seems unlikely that the timing belt broke as no horrific sounds were produced other than a minor chugging sound.

The car seems to lack spark or compression. It’s unlikely all the spark plus went out.

Here are my guesses:
Compression failure: maybe a blown head gasket.
Fuel injector or filter issue
Damaged coil packs
Maybe the timing chain

Any other guess would be appreciated. I’m by far a mechanic.

Hello and welcome to 2CarPros. Why do you believe the alternator cause the drive belt to snap? Does the pulley spin when you manually turn it? If you believe the chain broke then I would recommend you do a compression check. Let us know what the readings are. If compression is good then I do not suspect a broken chain.

Can you also upload an audio sound of what it sounds like when you attempt to start it so we can listen to it and try and figure out what is going on? Once you give us the compression readings and video we can proceed from there.

The alternator pulley seems to have damaged tracks and when attempting to start the car once I replaced the belt, the pulley bent. I’ll see about the audio tomorrow. My guess is after running on the minor deformation as the alternator was recently replaced the belt eventually slipped and snapped.

Wow! That thing just snapped off! I hope they parts warranty it for you if you just had it recently installed. Alternator looks pretty fresh. After you remove the alternator you should inspect all the other pulleys and the tensioner.

Yeah, I have a warranty for it. It’s pretty crazy for it to bend like that. I figure I’ll try to get the car running before installing the new one.
