My battery drained flat on my car today. My husband replaced it. It is twenty one degrees here. I started the car and drove it immediately. At idle it started doing a jerking motion and acting like it was trying to shut off. It is an automatic. I turned it off and then tried to start it again and it did not want to start. I got it started but there jerking started and the check engine light came on. I got it home not sure what is wrong.

Well, there are a lot of things that could be wrong. Since the engine light is on the computer has set a trouble code. If you can get to a mechanic's shop or auto parts store, you can get it scanned and get the code number(s). A mechanic will probably charge for scanning, but the auto parts stores do it for free. Post the code(s) here and we will be able to do more than guess at it.

If you want to see if there is something obvious wrong before getting it scanned, it is possible that your husband knocked something loose when he changed the battery. You could look under the hood and just see if anything is apparent.

Okay, that code indicates a potential issue with the manifold air pressure (MAP) sensor. That could be causing your running problem. Since that sensor is located basically on top of the engine, you can actually inspect it yourself. Below is a picture showing where it is. Be sure to make sure that the sensor is tight in its place and that the wires to it are tightly connected. Then unhook your battery for a few minutes, hook it back up, and see how the car does now.

We replaced that but have not unhooked the battery yet. Today the car is shutting off when it gets under 1 rpm and I have to restart it get the rpm's high so I can swap it to drive and drive but if I slow down to go around a curve or come to a complete stop the car shuts off.

Definitely clear the codes out. If it is still acting up, you probably need to look for an vacuum leak somewhere. It will be somewhere around that manifold or in some hose or tubing connected to it.

Here is a how-to guide on vacuum leaks: https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-use-an-engine-vacuum-gauge
