Welcome to 2CarPros.

Most commonly, a sensor called a crankshaft position sensor will fail when hot and require time to cool for it to work again. Take a look through these links:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/symptoms-of-a-bad-crankshaft-sensor

The best way to determine if the sensor is not working is by checking for an engine RPM signal using a live data scanner. If there is no reference, the sensor is my first suspect.

Let me know if you have other questions and the specific make and model of the vehicle.

Take care,
Joe
