When accelerating from a stop the car makes a popping/ratcheting sound that can aso be felt. It has gradually gotten worse from the beginning when it only used to happen under heavy acceleration. The car still moves but certainly not with as much power as it should(kind of feels like it is hesitating to go). It has the 5 speed that lets you select your gears and playing with it I have only gotten it to make the sound in first gear on that, which makes me think it is a problem with the transmission. What is your opinion on the matter? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you

If it happens under periods of high torque, it is most likely the transfer case drive chain that is slipping across the sprocket teeth. You might notice some indication in the fluid.
