Is there possibly another name, there is no such thing. What area are you pursuing?

I was told that there was a shift computer.
The car was shifting and then it started acting up and woulld not shift. You could shut the car off and restart it and it would shift fine. Then it got worse and now it won't shift at all. But at first you could shut it off and it restart it and it would shift fine, this went on for about a month or so. I was told by a few mechanics that there was a shift computer that I would need to replace. It is a 1996 cadillac SLS Seville With the northstar engine. The car had no problems with the trans at all, no slipping or noises just stopped shifting

Your engine/powertrain control module is responsible for engine and trans functions. Is there a check engine light on? I would not replace the ECM/PCM until you've had some quality diagnostics performed. If you can get the codes(if any), maybe we can narrow it down for you.
