WHITE SMOKE

1995 Cadillac Seville

Engine Mechanical problem
1995 Cadillac Seville V8 Front Wheel Drive Automatic 151000 miles

HI I HAVE A 95' CADILLAC AND JUST TRHEE DAYS AGO MY CAR STARTED BLOWING WHITE SMOKE AND IT SMELLS LIKE GAS, EVERY TIME I REWED THE ENGINE IT EVEN MORE, I CALLED A MECHANIC AND HE SUGGESTED THAT IT MAY HAVE BEEN BLOWN HEAD GASKETS, BUT WE DID NOT FIND AND LEAK OF ANY KIND, SO HE SUGGESTED TO USE " HEAD GASKET FIX" THE LIGUID WITH TINY METALS TO SEAL ANY SMALL CRACKS, IT HAS BEEN TWO DAYS NOW AND THE GAS SMELLS STILL STRONG AND BLOWING A LOT OF WHITE SMOKE, IT IS ALSO CONSUMING LOT OF GAS. I NEED HELP FROM A HONEST MECHANIC. THANK YOU.

Is it running poorly? You either have a fuel pressure regulator that is leaking raw fuel into the vacuum line, or an injector that is stuck and passing fuel at full rate all the time.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR RESPONSE.
NOT REALLY, I JUST DONT PUSH ON THE GAS PEDAL MUCH SO THAT IT WONT SMOKE THE WHOLE CITY, BUT IT RUNS FINE. BUT IT IS ALSO CONSUMING LOTS OF GAS.

I would say it is probably the regulator. Pull the vacuum line that goes from the regulator to the manifold, and check for raw fuel. Possibly key it up and check, if at first you see nothing.

I HAVE BEEN CHECKING OVER THE INTERNET AND EVEN HAD " MECHANICS" COMING OVER TO SEE THE CAR AND GIVE ME A DIASNOSTIC THEY ALL POINTED AT THE HEAD GASKETS OR THE CYLINDERS, THEY ARE TELLING ME THAT I SHOULD REPLACE THE HEAD GASKET RINGS AND BUY THE HEAD GASKET KIT, I REALLY DONT KNOW WHAT TO BELIEVE, THE AMOUNT OF MONEY THAT THEY ARE TELLING ME TO FIX IS JUST OUT OF MY REACH, AND ALSO I DONT BELIEVE THAT IT WOULD BE WORTH TO SPEND SO MUCH ON A OLD CAR.

You had not mentioned, is it using coolant? If it is using coolant, then it is most likely an internal leak. Excessive raw fuel will cause white smoke, and the raw fuel smell. An internal coolant leak will result in some fuel being unburned, and along with the smell you will be adding coolant. It will also be running poorly and misfiring, that will occur with the smallest amount of coolant in a cylinder.

THANK YOU FOR THE RESPONSE: YES IT USES COOLANT, I ALSO AGREE WITH THE INTERNAL LEAK OF COOLANT OR OIL OR GAS. I REALLY DONT KNOW, REALLY THANK YOU FOR YOUR ADVICE.
IF THE PROBLEM IS A LEAKAGE OF WHICH EVER TYPE INTERNALLY, WHAT WOULD BE THE POCKET DAMAGE? DO YOU BELIEVE IT IS WORTH SINCE IT ALREADY HAS 150K+ AND ANOTHER PROBLEM MIGHT COME AFTERWARDS. WHAT DO YOU RECOMEND? IF I DECIDE TO FIX IT HOW SHOULD I APPROACH A MECHANIC AND TELL HIM WHAT THE PROBLEM IS SO THAT THEY WONT HAVE THE CHANCE TO LEAVE BROKE.

THANK YOU AND HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU SOON.

If it is an internal leak, which I think you have pretty much confirmed, the repair cost would exceed the value of the car, if performed correctly. What happens, is the threads in the block end up degrading, as they are aluminum. The tension is lost, and the gasket ends up failing. The repair is to drill all the head bolt holes and install a steel insert called a timesert. This involves a procedure, and special tools. The approximate cost can be in the $2500 range. And then there are the other possibilities. If the engine has to be removed(probable method for a 95), there are considerations like having the lower crankcase sealed if leaking oil, and other incidentals that would save you labor to have done at the time. It is possible a mechanic will tell you there could be cracks and such as well, I have yet to see a crack in a Northstar in the 17 years they have been used. Is it probable? In theory, yes. Most likely it is what I have described. A person versed in Cadillac, will offer you about the same hypothesis.
