2003 Cadillac Deville Battery

I purchased a new battery for this car, not because of any problem, but because I want to avoid one. Is there any special procedure to follow when changing this battery. My normal procedure is to disconnect the negative first then the positive. When I put it back I connect the positive first then the negative. Someone told me that they thought I needed to leave the ignition switch in the on position due to the anti theft system cadillac has.
