The car sounds normal until about 40 or more mph, then the car sounds as it would in park with the driver revving up the engine. What could be or is wrong?

Internal transmission issue, leaking seal. Does it eventually catch up when revving, or rev to limits. Is there a check engine light on. It could have a shift solenoid issue as well.
