1997 Cadillac Catera steering does not respond

I was backing out of my drive way when I heard a clunk. And then it feels the the steering wheel is diconnected from the wheels.I can turn the wheel completly to the left or right and the wheels do nothin.

Hi:
Open the hood and check the steering shaft coming through the fire wall. Also, check under the front to check for broken tie rods, pitman arm.

Let me know what you find.
