Engine Cooling problem
1997 Cadillac Catera 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive

I just bought a 97 Cadillac Catera. There is a major coolant leak coming from underneath, near there back of the engine. I was told that the heater core needs to be replaced. Does that sound right? How difficult is this repair?

Not a heater core, more like a heater control valve. It is common for those to leak although, there are several causes for a leak in that area. It is possible to repair, not what I'd consider easy. The wipers, and cowl vent need to come off, and there is an access panel held on with a plastic 10mm nut. The factory clamps on the coolant hoses are spring type clamps. There are three hoses going to the valve, and a vacuum hose at the diaphragm.
