Only 40 miles on 1/2 tank of gas

1998 Buick Regal LS, 149,500 miles, 3800 series V6. Until recently this car has been very powerful, but sometimes under a load, like going up a hill, began to feel like it was missing a little. I changed the fuel filter a couple of weeks ago, but the gas mileage has been getting really bad. Tonight, I watched the gas gauge needle drop from just below the half-full mark all the way down to empty with the warning buzzer going off after only 40 miles! I could literally see the needle moving even when idling. It does not smell of gasoline and does not appear to have any gas leaks under the car or around the recently replaced fuel filter. The exhaust does not show signs of running too rich. Where could the gas have gone?

IF it was running that rich, I doubt it would run at all.
A check engine light would surely illuminate.

LEt it idle and watch for a fuelleak from the outside even if you don't smell fuel.

If none drive it around the block and feel each wheel rim for excessive heat.

IF nothing is found I would begin to question the gauge accuracy.

Got back in the car the next day and the needle rose from redline-empty back to 1/4 tank within one mile of the house. Guess the gauge was getting the wrong information. I plan to replace the fuel sending unit and fuel pump. Thanks for the suggestions!

Wouldn't surprize me me if the reostat on the sender was bad. Get a good look at the electrical connections while your there.

Sometimes you can get the whole pump & sender unit for the same price as just the sender. For what its worth.
