Engine Cooling problem
2000 Buick Park Avenue Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Hi. I have a Buick Park Avenue (2000) and lately I've noticed that the temperature gauge needle goes to about the 3/4 mark toward the hot indicator. The weird thing is that this doesn't happen every time I use the car.. sometimes it stays in the middle, or just slightly toward the cool side. The gauge also seems to go down (middle/cool side) when I drive faster on the highway, @ 65-70 mph. In the last month or so, I put new coolant in the reservoir tank, and that seemed to help keep it constant for a couple weeks, but now the needle is going toward 'hot' again, and the tank is full. I know that the car hasn't had a radiator flush for a long time, if ever, and I wondered if that might be what it needs, or if there is a bigger problem? Would you let me know what you think (if this message makes sense). Thanks, Kirk B.

Kirk:
If it gets hot in traffic and cools off at highway speed, it sounds like the cooling fans are not turning on. Check them to see if they are working and let me know.

Hi. Sorry it took so long to get back to you.. I checked the cooling fans, and they're running ok. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Kirk

If the fans are working and it cools off at highway speed, then the thermostat is working properly. What I would do next is try flushing the cooling system.
