Engine Performance problem

We just recently had gas put in our car and we were at the gas station and then all of a sudden once we went to leave the gas station the car wouldn't start. We had to have it towed back home. We have charged the battery and check the connections that go to the starter and everything and it still won't start. You go to turn the car and it will turn over but it makes a grinding noise whenever you try to start it. What could it be. The other day it backfired and broke the cover that goes to the air cleaner when it back fired it split it in half. What could be wrong with it? Get back to me as soon as possible. Thank you!!!!
