1997 BMW 840 Antifreeze

Engine Cooling problem
1997 BMW 840 V8 Two Wheel Drive 81K miles

My question is not model specific really, but I was just curious as to whether or not if it's OK to use an over the counter antifreeze/engine coolant such as Prestone, rather than OEM BMW coolant that's only available from the dealer in my BMW.
Thanks

Hi there,

For money i would stick with the BMW spec coolant, I am suer that is is formulated to be compatible with the alloys used with in the cooling systems, generic coolant can be to acidic or to alkaline and this can cause problems in the long term, stick with the BMW product , i feel that it will save you money in the long term.
