I have a v8 with a zf5hp30 trans. This is a two owner car me being the second It has 183000 miles. I have had is since 90000miles. It has been mantained at bmw shop. Just recently I was getting a clunk on downshift. I took it in to be serviced and check the clunk. They checked codes and it showed voltage fault and brake level sensor. They said they stress tested the tranny and said it needed to be replaced. So I had my wife pick it up. She barely got home on limp mode. I was out of town at the time. I got home and pulled the batt to find it was bad. I changed the batt and now I am getting 2 different codes. P0720 & P0733 It will not hold a forward gear it goes to slipping or neutral. If I putt it in reverse it will go good. I put it in drive and it hits good then goes back to neutral. I am not sure if the trans is bad now or just the output speed sensor. Any Ideas?

Inspect the fluid.
If it is burnt, replace the transmission.
At that mileage the trans is probably toast.

I have now re-built the transmission but did not replace the speed sensors. I am still getting the code P0720-(Output speed sensor Cuircut malfunction) now that everthing is back together. When I went to test drive the car, there were no codes detected. On return I checked again and I am now getting the P0720 code. What do you suggest?

They do that, replace the sensor with an OE BOSCH UNIT ONLY!
Then reset adaptations and drive the car.
Have a nice day
