My mechanic told me my 1998 528i needs a new head gasket (one side only). I've been quoted 18.8 hours labor at a rate of $100 per hour. Total estimate is nearly $3k. Is this accurate?

If the head is not cracked, replacement of the gasket should be about 16 hours and there is an inaccuracy in that there are no sides, inline sixes are for lack of a better term, inline, so I dont know what one side means. Due diligence calls for the head to be pressure checked and rebuilt if needed. If replacement is required due to a failed casting, expect the $ to go accordingly.
