E36 318is m42 motor.I have tried my new peake research r5 engine code scan tool but it gave me a no faults code, now I am baffled? Can you guys give me some more troubleshooting advise on trying to get my car running again. Would the coils be working if I have spark at plugs? I have read about a fusable link between the battery positive cable and the starter, any ideas? When I try to start car I get a slight backfire. Also, under drivers side panel (under steering) I saw a brown relay, any clue what this is for? Thanks for your time ; )

The problem might be in the power train control module AKA the DME. I have seen many of the M-42 motor cars fail in this manner causing issues ranging from a check engine light that won't go out to not completing the readiness monitor to no start conditions. Have you confirmed fuel pressure and deliver yet? Do this before condemning the DME.
