Engine Cooling problem
1995 BMW 316 Automatic

Drive a 1995 316im mileage around 188, 000kms. I have noticed afer regularly using my car often, it loses water from the coolant, and at times green in colour. However, the thermostat is still in the middle range. There are also some other times when I put water into the coolant right to the top, and just go for a 5min drive, and the coolant levels will be right at the bottom, with no visible leaking. On a couple occassions, the car does over heat and the thermostat is in the red.

This problem requires that the cooling system be pressure tested and the outcome will direct the repair. Your post might lead me to believe that there is a problem in the cylinder head casting or with the profile gasket. The plugs need to come out and an inspection of the combustion chambers followed for the presence of coolant in the combustion chambers. The profile gasket at the front of the head is also a place where coolant can escape.
