Bakes not responsive

My brakes are not responsive when I press on the brakes to stop. I need to press on the brakes all the way down just so they can grab on the tires. What is the problem?

Do you mean the pedal goes too far to the floor, or do you mean it's still high and firm like normal but you have to push really hard on the pedal to get the car to stop? Are any warning lights on? Have you checked the level of the brake fluid in the reservoir?
