I recently bought an A6 and the oil pressure gauge and engine temp gauge are flat even after running the car for a while. The car seems to start and run fine but I am concerned about these readings. Are there any tests I can do to troubleshoot whether I am having an instrument issue or a real mechanical issue. If it is an instrument issue, how could I go about diagnosing and fixing the problem. Thanks for any suggestions.

I believe your oil gauge is the oil temp, not pressure. Anyway, the multi-function temp sensor and oil temp sensor are probably the cause, as was the case with my '95 A6 2.8L V6. The temp sensor is important since other than communicating to your dash gauge, it also kicks on your radiator fans (both of them) and car can overheat when switch is dead. View the first two diagrams in the attached link under (component location). Both are reachable with some removal of the plastic top cover and getting under the car for the oil temp gauge.
