My 1997 V6 Audi A4 died on the road last week. It did this a few months previously and cost $470 for a new fuel pump - and the problem recurred within 3 hours. The mechanic replaced the fuel pump at no charge, but it still didn't run right. He replaced the fuel filter and it seemed OK - until last week.

I had it towed home and replaced the fuel filter. I can hear the fuel pump when the ignition is turned on for a few seconds and it continues to run if I crank the engine. It will start - stumbles - then dies. Is there something else I can check out with out fancy diagnostic tools to attempt to find the problem - or am I stuck with big bucks again?

Thaniks for your help!

My car was running very rough and would die shortly after start. I paid the dealer a lot of money to clean the throttle body, replace breather hoses, check for vacuum leaks etc. Turns out, it was the temp sensor and it is a high failure item. When it goes out, the computer thinks the engine is colder or warmer than it actually is and sends the wrong signals for the fuel mixture.... Dealer wants 60 for the part, Ebay has it for $15. Have your mechanic check to see if you have the round plug or the square type,, mine turned out to be the square, so i ordered the wrong part and it took longer to get back on the road, don't make the same mistake....
i have a 97 A4 2.8 6 cyl quattro automatic

BTW- The check engine light never came on and the computer never threw any codes,,,,,
