I have a new 2007 Chevy Aveo with automatic transmission. I have been driving for 35 years and have never used my parking brake except when parking on a hill. My Dad says you should set the parking brake every time you park or it will damage the automatic transmission. Is this true?

When parking on a steep hill if you set the Parking Brake first and then shift into park it will make it easier to get it out of Park when you drive the vehicle again. Sometimes there is a high load on the parking pawl that causes increased effort to get the transmission out of Park. This procedure is probably mentioned in your Owners Manual, it's mentioned in mine. You will not damage the transmission by not setting the Parking Brake although it isn't a bad habit to get into. Regular use will also keep it free and working smoothly.
