Hi, i'm studying a car mechanics course at college and i just can't get my head around working out what each cylinder is doing. like the firing order of one engine could be 1342 and like cylinder 1 is doing induction, compression, power and exhaust but how do i work out what the other cylinders are doing?

please can somebody help me i've got an exam comming up and i really need to get my head around this

the way I look at it say the firing order is 1342, then since 1 is firing then the next one to fire would be no 3 and it would be comming up to on the compression stroke. number 4 would be comming into the intake stroke and number 2 since it fired before 1 would be on the exhaust stroke. this pattern keeps repeating itself take the firing order was 3241
number 3 firing
2 compression
4 intake
1 exhaust
as far as i know that is the way it works,
