I was earlier not able to crank the car. After letting it sit for a couple of weeks I tried starting the car after putting in a Quart of motor oil, and it started just fine.

The engine sounds fine on low idling. If I hit the gas pedal (even in Neutral) I hear a continuos knocking sound from near (or from?) The engine.

Is the knock from the top or bottom of the engine?

A top engine knock may be associated with a timing belt about 1/2 tooth off. If the belt breaks it's goodby top of the engine. How long since the belt has been changed. The water pump is cam belt driven also and could be the noise. Let me know.
